Yesterday I saw my first Peacock butterfly of the year while I was working in the garden. Two days earlier, I spotted my first Oystercatcher this year, a mile from the house. They come inland to nest before returning back to the coast. Spring has well and truly sprung.
Did you know that in old Scottish walled gardens oyster catchers were often kept to eat slugs and other pests? Presumably eggs were hatched by a broody hen and their wings were clipped. Apparently they become quite tame, and their appearance and call would delight any gardener.
