Trumptown Latest - Wrong Idea, Wrong Place and Wrong Time

Apparently the Donald will know within four weeks whether his dream of building the "world's greatest golf course" in Scotland will become a reality. John Swinney, the secretary for finance and sustainable growth has taken delivery of the report from Scottish Government planning reporters following a four-week inquiry into the tycoon's proposals to develop a £1 billion golf resort at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire.

Even if the answer is yes can anyone see this going ahead? In the current or foreseeable climate there's not going to be the investment money around for Trump to build his dream. What? He doesn't use his own money? Of course he doesn't, it's investors who stump up the cash. So all that will have happened is it's probably cost us tax payers a million or so pounds to pay for an enquiry and for what? It always was the wrong idea in the wrong place, now it's the wrong time as well.

Of course if granted by the government we'll then have a judicial review of that decision based on the decision to call in in the first place - which is legally a bit dodgy. There is a strong possibility that Scottish Natural Heritage (a government funded QUANGO) will take the action against the Scottish ministers - meaning we pay for both sides, the courts, the inquiry - coupled with the waste for Aberdeenshire council taxpayers when the matter had been through every procedure in the local authority and a letter was being written.

I did not think there was the stench of sleaze about it, but a procedural nightmare running roughshod over domestic law and EU law, that I suggested in my blog late last year would not be resolved until well into 2009, or 2010. Who knows by the time the court proceedings finish the economy might have recovered ;-)

I agree on there being no sleaze here Scott. I've argued on here before that it's all about vain glory from Trump and a lack of understanding about several things, including the weather and the demand for such a venture

When you see the kind of overpriced rubbish this man has erected elsewhere-Dubai for example we can hope that Scotland will yet be spared

Who can afford to travel? The
80's are over Mr. Trump. They worked for you for a while, but that lifestyle is passé and unsustainable.

Has nobody told Trump that 'the world's greatest golf course' already exists in Scotland. It's called St Andrews.
