Bring Back the Birch, But Don't Stop There

There's a letter in the Scotsman today which beggars belief. The writer suggests 'euthanasia for eliminating criminals' and finishes with this statement.

Taking everything into account, keeping and encouraging a criminal population, including terrorists, almost certainly costs billions every year. The advice of the Scottish jurist - "hang a thief when he is young and he'll no steal when old" - is as valid today as when it was first uttered.

In the 21st Century it's staggering that this is how someone thinks.

I love our local paper's letter page, it's full of stuff like this. I don't know whether it's only deranged people who write in or whether the paper will only print the more outrageous opinions. I suspect it's more of the latter.
