House Prices...

There's a big ol' fluff piece on the BBC about IKEA Flat Pack homes being brought into the country that will sell in Gateshead to first time buyers at around £150K, similarly apartments/flats at around £90K. This is trumpeted as big, big news because of the housing shortage, and the fact that they are so cheap. Not that they said it on the piece but apparently house building is at its lowest rate since the Second World War.

Here in the Scottish Borders it won't be such big news. In Hawick there are quite a few flats for sale at offers of over between £40 - £60,000. The cheapest is a one bedroom flat at offers over £34,000. You'll have to be quick because that one is under offer.

Of course there’s the obvious correlation between jobs and prices; Hawick, I believe, is not the easiest place to find work.

If one is not already on the housing ladder, methinks it's too late now.

It's the price of land that costs so much. How much does a building plot cost these days?

In the Borders you'll find little below 90K

James, that is a damning indicment of our system. We'll end up like Japan where mortgages are passed on from parents to children in their wills.
